Targus and our agency partners Outform approached us with a challenge: create a future‑focused retail experience that could showcase their new ‘CityLite’ range of backpacks in a more dynamic, space‑efficient way. With premium retail floor space shrinking and product ranges expanding, we set out to design an AR‑driven solution that would let customers explore multiple rucksacks in real time, at true scale, without requiring a large physical display.
The brief was to merge physical and digital worlds into a single seamless experience—what we call ‘Phygital’. Our solution would become the centrepiece of the Targus stand at IFA 2019 in Germany. Using a futuristic half‑bust mannequin as a physical anchor, we integrated a QR‑based target system to trigger an AR application on iPad Pros, allowing visitors to view, rotate, and understand the products as if they were physically worn.
To ensure absolute accuracy and realism, we used our proprietary photogrammetry capture rig to scan each product. This guaranteed perfect dimensions, textures, and materials—critical for convincing AR. Beyond the interactive experience, these high‑quality digital assets were repurposed for additional marketing outputs, including high‑resolution imagery and animation.
The final AR experience delivered a compelling blend of immersion, interactivity, and brand storytelling. Visitors could view products at real‑world scale, explore features through gamified interactions, and connect more deeply with the Targus brand. The installation successfully maximised product visibility within a minimal footprint—achieving the core goal of future‑proofing retail engagement.
